Rare Late 18th Century Chinese Shanxi Red Lacquered Panelled Wedding Cabinet
A rare and wonderfully impressive late 18th Century Chinese red lacquered tall panelled Wedding Cabinet in good antique condition. Made in Shanxi Province in Northern China, most likely in the late 1700s, this is a really wonderful piece. Dripping with age and authentic bygone charm, it will add gorgeous colour, Oriental rustic splendour and a Bohemian cultured feel to any interior.
Impressively sized and built to last, it was crafted from Yumu (Northern Elm) wood and is finished in the original dark red lacquer, which shows lovely signs of age and patination. This fantastic cabinet was likely originally gifted as a wedding present and features multiple recessed panels, three deep upper drawers, two doors, two internal shelves and a shapely lower apron with carved detailing.
Made in the vernacular style of the late 18th Century Shanxi Province, it features super recessed panelling with projecting mitred borders, chunky corner posts showing mortise and tenon joints, a lovely broad recessed top, mitred joints to the doors and top and metal door and drawer pulls.
All in all this is a splendid and impressively sized, rare, colourful and very useful antique Chinese panelled cabinet. At around 250 years old, it’s in remarkable condition and will add authentic antique Chinese grandeur to any setting.
CONDITION
This is in good antique condition. Structurally sound and built to last, it shows many signs of its age, which only add to its authentic appeal, including cosmetic marks, splits to the wood and a break to the lower left apron. But overall this is a fantastic and rare piece in good condition, especially for its age, and if well looked after should be around in another couple of centuries or more – please see the photos.
