Pair of Armchairs Iron Leather Artisan Jacques Adnet Brass 1950s MCM French

Pair of Armchairs Iron Leather Artisan Jacques Adnet Brass 1950s MCM French

A fantastic and rare pair of Mid Century leather, wrought iron and brass armchairs in lovely vintage condition. Designed by French Modernist giant Jacques Adnet and made in France in the 1950s, these stunning pieces are as much sculptural works of art as they are comfortable armchairs and will add fascination and an unmistakably fabulous French Modernist aesthetic to any setting.

Adnet was one of France’s foremost avant-garde design geniuses. His work combined functionalist principles with forward-thinking Modernism right through the Mid Century period and this fabulous pair are a wonderful example of the stylistic terms ‘Streamline Modern’ and ‘Machinisme’, which have been used to describe his forward-thinking work.

Designed and made in the 1950s during Adnet’s leather-clad furniture period, these wonderful armchairs use contrasting colouring and materials to great effect and mix sculptural French elegance and quality with robust yet stripped-back Bauhaus-influenced sleek lines.

They feature a reassuringly solid streamlined wrought iron frame, with which the rare original-toned and sculpturally-shaped, padded and hand-stitched tan leather complements wonderfully. The brass ball finials atop the back complete the wonderful mix of colour and materials and really set these chairs off as sculptural artforms as much as comfortable and eye-catchingly smart armchairs.

All in all this pair are a stunning, rare and enchanting example from a Modernist design master. As much works of art as they are comfortable and striking armchairs, they will be a knockout in any interior. We’d like to keep this rare pair together, but we can also sell them separately – please see the individual listing for details.

CONDITION

These gorgeous armchairs are in good-to-very-good vintage condition. Extremely solid, sturdy, reassuringly heavy, comfortable and highly usable – unlike many other Adnet chairs you find, which can’t hold weight to the seats – the only signs of their 70-year age are some minor marks to the wrought iron frames and the beautifully aged marks, scuffs and wear to the leather, which if anything only adds to their vintage appeal. Especially rare for retaining their original individual colouring, the leather has been treated to keep it rejuvenated and looking fantastic. Overall this is a fabulous pair in lovely, aged vintage condition and if well looked after they should be just as breathtaking for generations to come – please see the photos.
